During the cold and darker winter months, we spend more time indoors and our energy bills spike as we increase our usage of heating, lighting and other appliances. Thankfully, there are many ways you can reduce your home energy use that are simple and easy to do. Here are our top tips for staying warm for less over winter.
Maintain your heater – regularly servicing your heater by a professional will not only keep you and your household safe but ensure your system stays energy efficient.
Timing and temperature – your thermostat should be set between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius. Don’t be tempted to bump it up when you’re chilly, instead move around or put on some extra layers of clothing. Setting a timer for your heater to come on earlier will also prevent the need for a costly blast of heat when you start moving around your home.
Rug up – it’s much easier to warm yourself than it is to warm your whole house. Dress appropriately before you crank the heater either by putting on a jumper or wrapping yourself in a blanket or throw. Extra bedding at night is also ideal.
Shut off rooms you’re not using – rooms with low-foot traffic should be closed off as there is little point heating a space you’re not using. Think bathrooms, laundries and spare bedrooms. Some heating systems have zoning capabilities, so you can avoid heating certain areas.
Cover floors – rugs can help minimise heat loss and keep your feet warm if you have tile, timber or concrete floors.
Seal cracks and gaps – unsealed cracks and gaps can cause heat loss in your home. Track down any draughts, particularly around doors and windows, and seal them up to make your home nice and cosy. Your local hardware store will be able to provide advice on the best products to use. A cheap option is a door snake, which will keep cold air from coming in under your doors.
Curtains – up to 40% of the heat escaping your home is purely from uncovered windows. Not just for decoration, installing heavy curtains will help keep the warmth in at night.
Sunlight – ultraviolet radiation from the sun easily transfers through glass. Open your blinds and curtains during the day to let natural light warm your home.
