Autumn is the perfect time to tackle home maintenance before the wet, cold and shorter
days of winter set in. Make the most of mild but sunny days to focus on these key areas:
Clean gutters and drains – clogged gutters can lead to overflowing pipes, causing damage to exterior surfaces and allowing water to seep inside. Protect your home by cleaning them out in advance.
Remove dead branches and trees – dead trees and branches can be hazardous in strong winds, so cut them down to prepare for storms.
Seal cracks and gaps – mice only need a tiny gap to sneak inside and raid your pantry. As the mercury drops, they’ll be looking for a warm place to call home. Sealing cracks and gaps will prevent critters from making their way indoors and, also, stop cold drafts.
Service your heater – your home’s heating system should be serviced annually by a professional to ensure it’s in safe, working order. Avoid the last-minute rush before winter and schedule an appointment in early autumn.
Check your smoke alarm – at the end of daylight savings, replace the batteries in your smoke alarm whilst changing your clocks.
